Waratah Prevails Over Snow
The snow cleared for round two at the annual Waratah Speckle Park Sale held on property at Guyra Monday 20th July 2015. An excellent line of bulls and females were offered. Cattle sold to new and repeat buyers from as far as north as Comet in Queensland and as far south as Victoria to Kerang.
There were 54 registered bidders competing on the Waratah catalogue including Auctions Plus purchasers. 49 bulls were offered with 45 selling to an average of $4500. PTIC heifers averaged $4812.50 with 12 out of the 13 on offering selling. The yearling heifers also averaged $4812.50 with 8 out of the 12 heifers sold. A full clearance was achieved for the commercial heifers with all 7 selling to average $1328.60. Embryo packages sold to average $2600.
Volume buyer was Dean Armstrong from “Comet Downs”, Comet North Queensland. After inspecting the Waratah display at Rockhampton Beef 2015 Mr. Armstrong was impressed enough to take the 1000+km journey to buy 12 bulls to average $4375, selecting some of the lead bulls of the Waratah draft.
Top price of $18,000 was paid for Waratah Just Chillin J154 a Waratah Eddie E22 son purchased by the Van Der Drift family from Kerang in Victoria. After the performance of last year’s purchases, the Van Der Drifts returned to secure some of the very best of Waratah’s offering. The family purchased 9 head paying up to $7000 for a PTIC heifer J46 a Champagne Pretender daughter to complement their Black Diamond Speckle Park Stud.
Top priced female was $9000 for lot 92 a Codiak Putnam 61Y female purchased by Burnett Valley Pork Pty Ltd of Monto Queensland. Sandra Verdonschot upon purchasing the heifer at the sale exclaimed “My husband is going to kill me”, a further conversation revealed “If you’re buying the best I will be happy”, upon receiving the heifer, the purchasers revealed all parties were satisfied.
The Turnham family were pleased with their second annual sale at “Waratah” challenged by a postponement of the sale due to snow. Noting you certainly cannot change the weather on the day. The Turnham family thanked everyone for persevering with the rescheduled sale date and look for- ward to seeing you in 2016, for a warmer Guyra welcome at the 3rd Waratah Speckle Park sale.
We barely arrived home from Rocky and did a few things and loaded up the gear and headed to Toowoombah Farmfest.
Blake O’Reilly led Hume H14 in the Battle Of the Bulls British Breed where Hume took out third. Thanks Blake.
The days were spent making contacts, talking about the future of the breed and promoting our next on farm Sale. Monday 13th July 2015.
In 2014 we had our Inaugural sale
Colin Say & Co summed it up like this.
The first sale for any stud breeder certainly leaves you with a few sleepless nights leading up to the event, this would have been no different for the Turnham family of “Waratah” Guyra, selling 102 Speckle Park lots on Monday 14th July 2014.
These lots consisted of Speckle Park bulls, Brahckle bulls, Embryo lots, Cow and calf units, PTIC females, unjoined yearling heifers and commercial PTIC heifers. With gale force winds blowing for two days leading up to the sale it took the Landcruiser ute to hold the Marquee to the ground, but this did not stop the sale from being a huge success.
The top priced bull was Lot 14 Waratah H44which sold for $12,000 to Van Derdrift Sons Pty Ltd of Macorna Victoria. The Van Derdrift family were volume buyers, purchasing 22 lots, including the top priced female Lot 76 for $8000. The Van Derdrift family run a piggery which turns off 35,000 pigs annually. The family were attracted to the Speckle Park breed for their carcass attributes. The quality of the Waratah Speckle Park herd encouraged them to make the long journey to the cold climate of Guyra. This was their second inspection, the first being at Christmas time.

A fantastic result for Eric, Helen, Laiton and Kayla. This sale has been a work in progress for six years, and is the result of a lot of hard work and capital which has gone into this venture with many trips to Canada sourcing genetics. A huge congratulations from the staff at Colin Say and Co Pty Ltd for a fantastic first sale especially in a trying year testing the most hardy seedstock producers
Waratah Speckle Park headed to Rockhampton in May 2015. After a wet set up we had a very enjoyable week meeting lot’s of interested people in the Speckle Park Breed. Our two workplace students from Downlands College, Kate and Cloe were a tremendous help to us at the site and in the show ring. Our thanks go to Steve their teacher as well. Our achievements in the ring were as follows. Waratah females were unbeatable, winning Champion ribbons in all classes entered.
Grand Champion and Senior Champion Speckle Park female was won by Waratah H11 with calf at foot.
Reserve Senior Speckle Park Champion female was won by Waratah Amy J53 and Junior Speckle Park Champion female was awarded to Waratah Ember J31. Waratah performed exceptionally well in the breeders group taking home second place prizes. Another huge thank you to Downlands College, Toowoomba, in particular Kate Strong and Cloe Wallace, for your hard work and contribution preparing and presenting our cattle at Beef Australia.
